Subaru WRX STi Premium – A Brief Review

Subaru WRX STi Premium – A Brief Review

Subaru WRX STi Premium – A Brief Review

When most people think about the Subaru WRX STI, they immediately think of the rallying heritage, that the “Rex” has earned over the years. We have recently seen an announcement, marking a tentative return to rallying for Subaru, in this year’s Australian Rally Championship (ARC). With this exciting development, we have a stark reminder of the direct connection that the WRX STI has with rallying. The greatest thing about the WRX was that it was possible to walk into a dealership and buy a car that was very similar to those being raced. If a new WRX is out of your reach, Subaru used vehicles for sale at dealerships, may have a discounted “Rex” on sale.

A Little Nostalgia

Back in those halcyon rallying days, of the mid to late 90’s and the early 00’s, there were two main draws for the man in the street. They were the Subaru WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. Both of these vehicles had turbocharged power plants, AWD, and bags of street cred. These models excelled on the rallying circuit and became well known as giant killers in the sport. They were aspirational cars that you could see yourself driving one day if you could afford the insurance. The Subaru WRX STI was arguably more desirable than its rival, and it had a huge global fanbase.

The 2015 Subaru WRX STI Premium

This car carries on the tradition of its forerunners in fine style. Although the car has matured over the years, it has kept its edge. If they look for a bargain at used car dealers, Perth residents may find a WRX or WRX STI on sale, but to be honest, the new price is very keen. The collective eyebrows of the industry were raised, when Subaru announced the price starting at $55,390 plus on roads for the flagship premium model. This offers a lot of performance for the money, the 2.5 litre turbocharged boxer engine, delivers 221kW of power (at 6,000rpm) and 407Nm of torque (at 4,000rpm). The powerplant is married to a six speed manual gearbox and it goes from 0-100km/hr in only 5.2 seconds.

Directed Energy and Other Details

The whole car has a kerb weight of only 1,537kg, so it is both powerful and light. This would be a great combination in any performance car, but Subaru has taken it to the next level. All the power to weight ratio benefits would be lost without the ubiquitous Subaru AWD system and superb handling. Inside the cabin, it is a step up from the cheaper WRX siblings, as one would expect in a flagship car. There is a flat bottom steering wheel, a superb driving position and a racing aesthetic is present throughout the cabin. The wheelbase is now 25mm longer, and rear passengers will certainly appreciate the additional leg room. There is no doubt that this is the most refined WRX STI ever, yet it still wants to get on the track.
